“THREE DAYS OF MOURNING”
“I will not say: do not weep; for not all tears are an evil”
- J.R.R. Tolkien, The Return of the King
SURFACE DESIGN PROCESS:
Three layers of fabric layered to create an intense, moody, and dark, yet vibrant, representation of my own grief. I created this piece in the wake of my paternal grandmother’s passing, may she rest in peace.
Fabric selection includes bamboo jersey dyed mustard yellow, 100% black cotton, which was discharged, the resulting shape resist shows how black dye was taken out of fabric.
Parts of the discharged cotton was burned, exposing the layers of fabric beneath.
Lastly, this piece is topped with silk organza, which was wrapped inside long spindly sticks, secured with twine, before being submerged in a dye bath. Once left to dry the organza retains its shape, creating a sculptural element.
